Enjoy Your Smile Without Anxiety
Fear of the dentist consistently ranks among the top ten fears in the US. In fact, WebMD estimates that as many as 20% of all Americans experience some level of dental anxiety or fear. For some it’s the actual procedures, for others it’s the feeling of helplessness that comes with lying still in a chair for long periods of time, and some people are just uncomfortable with the idea of someone looking into their mouth.
There is certainly nothing wrong with a little anxiety, everybody experiences it sometime. Where does all this fear and anxiety come from? I could be unpleasant past experiences or scary stories shared by friends and family. In many cases it has to do with the fear that the dentist hurts.
Fear of Pain
This fear isn’t entirely unfounded, after all, in the old days dentistry could rather painful. But dentistry has come a long way in recent years. In fact, with modern dental sedation, most dental procedures can be pain free.
Tension Causes Pain
Sometime the pain of dental work doesn’t come from the procedure at all, but from the tension created by anxiety. When you become so nervous and fearful that your body tenses up, constricting muscles in your neck and shoulders, you could find yourself sore afterwards. Headaches and muscle soreness may result from tension like this.
To avoid pain and have a comfortable dental experience, the best thing for you is to relax. Easy, right? Well, it can be with the help of sedation dentistry.
You may know it as “laughing gas”. Nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedative that is perfect for treating mild anxiety, or for simple procedures like cleanings or small fillings. The gas is mixed with oxygen, and inhaled through your nose during the procedure. We can control the level of sedation based on your needs. Nitrous oxide will ease your nerves and calm your mind without knocking you out. You will stay awake and mostly alert, but you will not feel any anxiety, thanks to the laughing gas.
For severe dental anxiety, or long and involved procedures, you may require oral sedation. About an hour before your scheduled procedure, you will take a prescribed sedative pill. It is important that you arrange for a ride to and from our office because this is a heavy form of sedation and you will not be able to drive yourself.
Oral sedation will put you into a deep state of relaxation, but you will remain conscious. It is not uncommon for patients to become so relaxed that they fall asleep during their procedure, but a soft nudge is all that is need to rouse them.
One of the amazing benefits of oral sedation is that it allows you to undergo multiple procedures in one visit, so that you can speed up your recovery start enjoying your healthy new smile sooner.
